Film Production

My film I am going to design will be called: In The Dark

The genre of my chosen film design will be a horror. I want my film to have a similar narrative to Mama. the basic idea of being able to make the audience jump.

The reason for this is because i think it is a basic story line that is easy to follow and try to turn it into my own film. It will be about a teenager who lives in his parents house and starts to hear noises down and upstairs, he goes to investigate these noises and gets more than he bargained for.

One night it became more nosier and the teenager who is called Dan goes to investigate. What will be up against? What will scare him to most?

The setting of my film will be based inside a normal ordinary house, as i want to the make the audience feel it, because the viewers will also live in homes, instead of a setting such as a forrest, where some people could be miles from a forest.
The main character that will be used in this film is: Dan ( the normal teenager ), Figure 1 Figure 2 and Figure 3, the reason they are called Figure is because they will never be seen, just quick moving figure shadows.
The age rating of my film will be is mid teen to older adults. ( 15+ ). To both male and female both 50% each, the 15+ age group is because this is a horror and i feel should not be watched by kids. Also this is not a gender sided movie and can relate to both the males and females of our time.

Film trailer and poster analysis

The key conventions on this film poster are:
Central Image - We have the central image of Leonardo Dicaprio in the middle.
Secondary Image - We do have a background image, the background image on this film poster is a bunch of people looking like they are having a party of some sort as they are wearing costumes and looks like they are partying.
Title - We have the title on this film poster a the top. This is because it is easy to spot so people know the what the film poster is. Also it is in a large font, this is because it is easy to read and so it stands out.
Release Date - This film poster does have the release date at the bottom of the poster as it is not as much important towards the other key conventions on this poster.
Stars - We have the name of the stars at the top and bottom, the main character in this film poster name is right at the top as he is the main character and as the film is about him. Other stars names is at the bottom the reason they would add their names too is because they might of been/directed in other films and other people might of watched their other films and liked them so they would come here and see what other films they have made/directed and watch it.
Production Blurb - Yes in this film poster we have the director's at the top and the bottom of this film poster. This is because the director must be famous for making other films that became popular.

Institution Details - Yes there is a moment in this clip were the institution logo is shown which is at the end. They put it in small because it not as important as the other clips they show.
Short Clips to introduce character - Yes there is a part in this clip were in big writing they introduce Leonardo DeCapri as he is the main star in this film as has been in a few other films.
Fast Paced Editing - Yes everywhere in this film trailer this is different clips where there is fast paced editing as they are showing different clips and to add intense to the trailer to make the person want to watch this film.
Stars - Yes the main star is Leonardo DeCapri which makes a wild entrance into this trailer.
Title and release date - Yes there is title at the end of this trailer, the title is shown big as it makes the trailer stand out more and is written in a font were people can read it easily. Unfortunately the producers did not add the release date to this film trailer, instead they added `Coming Soon.`
Production Blurb - Yes at the end there is the names of the directors and producers. They added this because they made/directed popular films before and so more like them, and they add their names to make more people watch their film and attract more of the audience and make more money.
Music - The music feel in this trailer is chosen well to make this film sound like a comedy/action film.

Case Study

My Chosen Film:

Q1)

I have chosen The Wolf of Wall Street as my Case Study.

Q2)

I have chosen The Wolf of Wall Street as my Case Study. This is because on IMDB it got rated 8.3, it is also one of the films that I can expand my answers on as there is a lot of things I can talk about.

Institutional Background:

Q1)

The Institutional Background of The Wolf of Wall Street is Red Granite Pictures.

Q2)

The UK theatrical distributor for The Wolf of Wall Street is Universal Pictures International.

No Brand Loyalty:

Q1)

The genre The Wolf of Wall Street fits into is Biography/Comedy/Crime.

Q2)

The Wolf of Wall Street fits into the genre Biography/Comedy/Crime because in the trailer it shows the life of a boy from high school towards his future life and how he becomes rich. The genre Comedy fits this film because there are some funny scene's in this film but the jokes made in this film is aimed at higher aged people. The genre Crime fits into this film as there are fighting moments and a scene that uses a gun as shown in the trailer.

Q3)

The Wolf of Wall Street is not a sequel. It does not have a follow up film.

Q3a)

No, no previous films by the writer, director or star is mentioned in this film trailer.

It's all a matter of timing:

Q1)

The UK's release date for The Wolf of Wolf Street is 17th January 2014

Q2)

The first trailer appeared on Youtube on the 16th of July 2013, this was the earliest example i could find as it was direct from the production company's page, Paramount Pictures.

Q3)

The release of my movie was first released in New York, on the 17th of December 2013. The other types of marketing i found relating to my movie was many teaser trailers, posters/billboards, online adverts on websites, also some interviews popped up online from some of the actors talking about the build up to the movie.

It's a social thing:

Q1)

The word of mouth for my chosen film is pretty good, its online ratings are high with IMDB rating it a 8.3 which is pretty good because IMDB users are usually pretty harsh when it comes to rating movies. for example, some movies i have seen i would rate a 10/10 but on IMBD the rating is a lot lower. So all in all i feel the reviews form IDMB are pretty good, there are some mixed responses but most are positive thus giving it a 8.3.

Q2)

"Martin Scorsese has done it again."
"The humor is not bad and there is a decent amount of it throughout the movie."
""The Wolf of Wall Street" paints a very decadent picture of the financial sector and its corrupted denizens, perverted by money and greed."

These 3 quotes show different pictures of what the reaction is of my movie, i feel the can still all relate and paint one main picture of what my film looks like.

Risky Business:

Q1)

The original budget for my movie was estimated to be around $100,000,000 (one million)

Q2)

below is how much the wolf of wall street made in its opening weekend:

$18,361,578 (USA) (27 December 2013) (2,557 Screens)
AUD 4,460,762 (Australia) (23 January 2014) (325 Screens)
HUF 75,696,997 (Hungary) (29 December 2013)
€3,811,319 (Italy) (26 January 2014) (560 Screens)

Q3)

The wolf of wall street grossed in around $392 million world wide.

Stars in their eyes:

Q1)

The director of my movie is Martin Scorsese, he also directed other movies such as Shutter Island and many others, some are of similar genre but the majority of them are of different genres. i feel this is better for him as it shows how diverse he can be when it comes to directing.

Q2)

the main star in the film is Leonardo DiCaprio, he played Jordan Belfort

Q3)

Leonardo is many other films, some are similar but not all, i feel he is a really good and diverse actor as he can play many different roles in movies. although he is yet to win an Oscar, i feel he is one of the best.

Q4)

The name of the director is mentioned in the 20th second of the trailer and it says "FROM ACADEMY AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR *MARTIN SCORSESE* and then in the 38th second Leonardos name and other actors such as Johna Hill are mentioned.

The writer of this movie was a man who was actually known as Jordan Belfont who was arrested for fraud in the stock market. so this movie was based on true events.

Genre and NCIS

Genre:
Action/Thriller

Narrative:
The story line is clearly shown a mysterious death towards a fellow brother Han. The crew set out on a mission to find the killer. This fits the genre Action/Thriller well.

Character:
The characters in this trailer is of a typical american crew set out to solve a mysterious death. The crew: Strong, brave, fearless. Willing to do anything to save their family. Han: Weak, helpless. Required to be saved by the main hero's.

Iconography:
There is loads of iconography we can say about a action/thriller film: Car chase, smashing glass, car crashes, explosions, violence and running of a falling bridge or in this case running and jumping of a falling bus. These are all typical of an Action/Thriller film.

Setting:
Although the trailer is about 3 minutes long, it gives enough hints that the scene is set out somewere in america as the roads are really big. Within the other shots it looks like it has been filmed on high ways as the roads are massive enough to hold 3 cars in each lane. Some shots are taken off bridges and in airplanes which suggests this film is an action type.

Genre:
Action/Thriller

Narrative:
The storyline is clearly shown big monsters try to take over the cities. The team; Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man and Captain America, set out on a mission to take out the big monsters. This fits the genre Action/Thriller really well.

Character:
The characters in this trailer are a bunch of fiction monsters trying to save their country/city.The monsters: Big, Powerful, Unstopable. The team: Weaker then the monsters, have some power, end up winning in the end.

Iconography:
There is loads of iconography we can say about a action/thriller film: Car chases, smashing glass, fighitng, explosions, violence, big heavy machines. All of these Iconography all lead to a good Action/Thriller film.

Setting:
In this trailer the setting looks like it is taken somewere were there is more sun than usual. It looks like this film has been filmed at a bigger and a drier area were there will be enough space were the big monsters can do there fighting. There are also some scence's where there is fighting in cities, this is because it gives the audience more feel about how the people living in cities feel about big monsters fighting outside their house. It also adds more tense to the film as you may not know what might happen while in the cities.

Genre: Action/Comedy

Narrative:
The story line looks like is has been set out in cities, snowy mountains and in sewers. The turtle team are setting out trying to take out the crew ` The Foot Clan ` + ` The Shredder.` While they are out to fight of these guys there are lots of funny moments were the orange turtle ( Michelangelo ) cracks some jokes and says funny stuff without noticing it. This fits the Action/Comedy genre well.

Character:
The characters in this film are a bunch of turtles trying to set out to destroy a big machiene and a team of bad guys while having some funny scene's on the way. The turtles: Funny, Strong, Wise. Foot Clan: Strong, Not really smart in ways. Shredder: Unstoable, Strong.

Iconography:
In an Action/Comedy film there are loads of iconography's we can talk about such as: Jokes, Hilarious moments's, fighting, explosions. All of these iconography leads to a good Comedy/Action film.

Setting:
Although the trailer is about 3 minutes long, it gives enough hints that the scene is set on mountains and sewers. Having a turtle film set out in sewers gives enough information that the film will be intresting as there is not alot of films out there that is filmed in sewers. There is a scene where there is a fighting scene taken in a subway. This adds tense and a `edge on your seat` feeling as there is a moving train and screaming people while the turtles and the foot clan are fighting.
