Film Production

My film I am going to design will be called: In The Dark

The genre of my chosen film design will be a horror. I want my film to have a similar narrative to Mama. the basic idea of being able to make the audience jump.

The reason for this is because i think it is a basic story line that is easy to follow and try to turn it into my own film. It will be about a teenager who lives in his parents house and starts to hear noises down and upstairs, he goes to investigate these noises and gets more than he bargained for.

One night it became more nosier and the teenager who is called Dan goes to investigate. What will be up against? What will scare him to most?

The setting of my film will be based inside a normal ordinary house, as i want to the make the audience feel it, because the viewers will also live in homes, instead of a setting such as a forrest, where some people could be miles from a forest.
The main character that will be used in this film is: Dan ( the normal teenager ), Figure 1 Figure 2 and Figure 3, the reason they are called Figure is because they will never be seen, just quick moving figure shadows.
The age rating of my film will be is mid teen to older adults. ( 15+ ). To both male and female both 50% each, the 15+ age group is because this is a horror and i feel should not be watched by kids. Also this is not a gender sided movie and can relate to both the males and females of our time.

Film trailer and poster analysis

The key conventions on this film poster are:
Central Image - We have the central image of Leonardo Dicaprio in the middle.
Secondary Image - We do have a background image, the background image on this film poster is a bunch of people looking like they are having a party of some sort as they are wearing costumes and looks like they are partying.
Title - We have the title on this film poster a the top. This is because it is easy to spot so people know the what the film poster is. Also it is in a large font, this is because it is easy to read and so it stands out.
Release Date - This film poster does have the release date at the bottom of the poster as it is not as much important towards the other key conventions on this poster.
Stars - We have the name of the stars at the top and bottom, the main character in this film poster name is right at the top as he is the main character and as the film is about him. Other stars names is at the bottom the reason they would add their names too is because they might of been/directed in other films and other people might of watched their other films and liked them so they would come here and see what other films they have made/directed and watch it.
Production Blurb - Yes in this film poster we have the director's at the top and the bottom of this film poster. This is because the director must be famous for making other films that became popular.

Institution Details - Yes there is a moment in this clip were the institution logo is shown which is at the end. They put it in small because it not as important as the other clips they show.
Short Clips to introduce character - Yes there is a part in this clip were in big writing they introduce Leonardo DeCapri as he is the main star in this film as has been in a few other films.
Fast Paced Editing - Yes everywhere in this film trailer this is different clips where there is fast paced editing as they are showing different clips and to add intense to the trailer to make the person want to watch this film.
Stars - Yes the main star is Leonardo DeCapri which makes a wild entrance into this trailer.
Title and release date - Yes there is title at the end of this trailer, the title is shown big as it makes the trailer stand out more and is written in a font were people can read it easily. Unfortunately the producers did not add the release date to this film trailer, instead they added `Coming Soon.`
Production Blurb - Yes at the end there is the names of the directors and producers. They added this because they made/directed popular films before and so more like them, and they add their names to make more people watch their film and attract more of the audience and make more money.
Music - The music feel in this trailer is chosen well to make this film sound like a comedy/action film.

Case Study

My Chosen Film:

Q1)

I have chosen The Wolf of Wall Street as my Case Study.

Q2)

I have chosen The Wolf of Wall Street as my Case Study. This is because on IMDB it got rated 8.3, it is also one of the films that I can expand my answers on as there is a lot of things I can talk about.

Institutional Background:

Q1)

The Institutional Background of The Wolf of Wall Street is Red Granite Pictures.

Q2)

The UK theatrical distributor for The Wolf of Wall Street is Universal Pictures International.

No Brand Loyalty:

Q1)

The genre The Wolf of Wall Street fits into is Biography/Comedy/Crime.

Q2)

The Wolf of Wall Street fits into the genre Biography/Comedy/Crime because in the trailer it shows the life of a boy from high school towards his future life and how he becomes rich. The genre Comedy fits this film because there are some funny scene's in this film but the jokes made in this film is aimed at higher aged people. The genre Crime fits into this film as there are fighting moments and a scene that uses a gun as shown in the trailer.

Q3)

The Wolf of Wall Street is not a sequel. It does not have a follow up film.

Q3a)

No, no previous films by the writer, director or star is mentioned in this film trailer.

It's all a matter of timing:

Q1)

The UK's release date for The Wolf of Wolf Street is 17th January 2014

Q2)

The first trailer appeared on Youtube on the 16th of July 2013, this was the earliest example i could find as it was direct from the production company's page, Paramount Pictures.

Q3)

The release of my movie was first released in New York, on the 17th of December 2013. The other types of marketing i found relating to my movie was many teaser trailers, posters/billboards, online adverts on websites, also some interviews popped up online from some of the actors talking about the build up to the movie.

It's a social thing:

Q1)

The word of mouth for my chosen film is pretty good, its online ratings are high with IMDB rating it a 8.3 which is pretty good because IMDB users are usually pretty harsh when it comes to rating movies. for example, some movies i have seen i would rate a 10/10 but on IMBD the rating is a lot lower. So all in all i feel the reviews form IDMB are pretty good, there are some mixed responses but most are positive thus giving it a 8.3.

Q2)

"Martin Scorsese has done it again."
"The humor is not bad and there is a decent amount of it throughout the movie."
""The Wolf of Wall Street" paints a very decadent picture of the financial sector and its corrupted denizens, perverted by money and greed."

These 3 quotes show different pictures of what the reaction is of my movie, i feel the can still all relate and paint one main picture of what my film looks like.

Risky Business:

Q1)

The original budget for my movie was estimated to be around $100,000,000 (one million)

Q2)

below is how much the wolf of wall street made in its opening weekend:

$18,361,578 (USA) (27 December 2013) (2,557 Screens)
AUD 4,460,762 (Australia) (23 January 2014) (325 Screens)
HUF 75,696,997 (Hungary) (29 December 2013)
€3,811,319 (Italy) (26 January 2014) (560 Screens)

Q3)

The wolf of wall street grossed in around $392 million world wide.

Stars in their eyes:

Q1)

The director of my movie is Martin Scorsese, he also directed other movies such as Shutter Island and many others, some are of similar genre but the majority of them are of different genres. i feel this is better for him as it shows how diverse he can be when it comes to directing.

Q2)

the main star in the film is Leonardo DiCaprio, he played Jordan Belfort

Q3)

Leonardo is many other films, some are similar but not all, i feel he is a really good and diverse actor as he can play many different roles in movies. although he is yet to win an Oscar, i feel he is one of the best.

Q4)

The name of the director is mentioned in the 20th second of the trailer and it says "FROM ACADEMY AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR *MARTIN SCORSESE* and then in the 38th second Leonardos name and other actors such as Johna Hill are mentioned.

The writer of this movie was a man who was actually known as Jordan Belfont who was arrested for fraud in the stock market. so this movie was based on true events.

Genre and NCIS

Genre:
Action/Thriller

Narrative:
The story line is clearly shown a mysterious death towards a fellow brother Han. The crew set out on a mission to find the killer. This fits the genre Action/Thriller well.

Character:
The characters in this trailer is of a typical american crew set out to solve a mysterious death. The crew: Strong, brave, fearless. Willing to do anything to save their family. Han: Weak, helpless. Required to be saved by the main hero's.

Iconography:
There is loads of iconography we can say about a action/thriller film: Car chase, smashing glass, car crashes, explosions, violence and running of a falling bridge or in this case running and jumping of a falling bus. These are all typical of an Action/Thriller film.

Setting:
Although the trailer is about 3 minutes long, it gives enough hints that the scene is set out somewere in america as the roads are really big. Within the other shots it looks like it has been filmed on high ways as the roads are massive enough to hold 3 cars in each lane. Some shots are taken off bridges and in airplanes which suggests this film is an action type.

Genre:
Action/Thriller

Narrative:
The storyline is clearly shown big monsters try to take over the cities. The team; Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man and Captain America, set out on a mission to take out the big monsters. This fits the genre Action/Thriller really well.

Character:
The characters in this trailer are a bunch of fiction monsters trying to save their country/city.The monsters: Big, Powerful, Unstopable. The team: Weaker then the monsters, have some power, end up winning in the end.

Iconography:
There is loads of iconography we can say about a action/thriller film: Car chases, smashing glass, fighitng, explosions, violence, big heavy machines. All of these Iconography all lead to a good Action/Thriller film.

Setting:
In this trailer the setting looks like it is taken somewere were there is more sun than usual. It looks like this film has been filmed at a bigger and a drier area were there will be enough space were the big monsters can do there fighting. There are also some scence's where there is fighting in cities, this is because it gives the audience more feel about how the people living in cities feel about big monsters fighting outside their house. It also adds more tense to the film as you may not know what might happen while in the cities.

Genre: Action/Comedy

Narrative:
The story line looks like is has been set out in cities, snowy mountains and in sewers. The turtle team are setting out trying to take out the crew ` The Foot Clan ` + ` The Shredder.` While they are out to fight of these guys there are lots of funny moments were the orange turtle ( Michelangelo ) cracks some jokes and says funny stuff without noticing it. This fits the Action/Comedy genre well.

Character:
The characters in this film are a bunch of turtles trying to set out to destroy a big machiene and a team of bad guys while having some funny scene's on the way. The turtles: Funny, Strong, Wise. Foot Clan: Strong, Not really smart in ways. Shredder: Unstoable, Strong.

Iconography:
In an Action/Comedy film there are loads of iconography's we can talk about such as: Jokes, Hilarious moments's, fighting, explosions. All of these iconography leads to a good Comedy/Action film.

Setting:
Although the trailer is about 3 minutes long, it gives enough hints that the scene is set on mountains and sewers. Having a turtle film set out in sewers gives enough information that the film will be intresting as there is not alot of films out there that is filmed in sewers. There is a scene where there is a fighting scene taken in a subway. This adds tense and a `edge on your seat` feeling as there is a moving train and screaming people while the turtles and the foot clan are fighting.

Assignment 1 Feedback Learner Response

The Feedback:

  • Planning Docks Fine.
  • Good Image + Title.
  • Need A Main Flash That Link's With Central Image.
  • Need To Get Slogan On There.
  • Cover Lines.
  • `I` Logo.
In the next few lessons I will be working towards adding the main cover lines to make my magazine cover look more professional and to give the audience a better idea of what the magazine cover I will be designing be about. I will also be adding an interview with a 16 year old who is actually been in the military kidets. I will even be adding a slogan to make my cover look more professional and so the audience would want to read more about what is life in the military as a teenager.

Minotory Report

This medium close up shot allows a clear shot of the police men who looks like they have came to get someone. These police men looks like they are after someone as they came in a group and it also looks like they are after someone very dangerous as they look like they are armed and well protected. They look armed because they are wearing safety helmets and you can see the strap of were the gun is, you can also see their protective clothing the police men are wearing. This allows the audience to understand there is going to be some kind of action/drama about to take place, also the Juxtaposition of the scene before this was Tom Cruise running of the subway train and running into these police men and this tells the audience that these police men are about to chase Tom Cruise.

Also they look like they are somewhere underground as you can see the staircase going down behind the group of the police men.

This is an Wide Shot image, a Wide Shot image allows us to see were the scene is set. In this Wide Shot image we can see a old car that looks like it has been vandalized and been sitting in that one spot for some time, also in the background we can see some houses/shops that looks like it is in repair because you can see the builders standing area. The Juxtaposition of the scene before this was Tom Cruise running away from the police men so this will let the audience know that Tom Cruise will be running round the corner and coming into this Wide Shot scene.
Also this scene looks like it has been taken from the front of an alley way, you can tell this because we can see darkness and shadows and if you look behind the car we can see Tom Cruise running towards the alley way as if he is running away the police men that is chasing him, also the car is rusty and looks like it hasn't been moved for a while. Also the shops are under construction so this lets the audience know that running into an alley way is not a good idea as there could be criminals there.

This image looks like it is a Medium Close Up Shot, a Medium Close Up Shot is when we can see the main character's face to his shoulder.
In this Medium Close Up image we can see Tom Cruise who looks like he has been captured by the group of the police men, we can tell this by his facial expressions, he looks like he is out of breathe, and looks like he is talking with the police men.
Behind Tom Cruise we can see the alley way he ran into, we can't see a lot of the alley way but we can see the shop he got caught in front of while he is in the alley way.The Juxtaposition of the scene before this was Tom Cruise running into the alley way trying to get away from the police. This lets the audience know that Tom Cruise didn't get far from the police and knows that Tom Cruise may do something to get away from the police or Tom Cruise may get taken in to questioning by the police.
This scene looks like it has been taken from someone were outside the alley way but really it is inside the alley way because in the scene before this we know that he ran inside the alley way and that is were he got caught.

fifa advert

Media Language

The first key convention that tells you this is a sports game is the EA Sports logo in the middle also the way the word `FIFA` is written is the same every year a Fifa game comes out. The key images on this cover shows pictures of two really talented footballers Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale. These superstars from the Premier League/La Liga are specifically chosen to advertise on the FIFA 14 cover as they are really good footballers and they are known world wide, FIFA has used these 2 superstars because every one would recognise them which makes it a better selling point for their games. In the background you can see that there is a real stadium and fans whcih have no colour, which means these are less important, and the things in colour are what are meant ot stand out, making them more eye catching.

Institution

The game was produced by EA sports and is avalible on many platforms. The game was first made to be played on the ps3 and xbox before it was made for any other games console,. It is a very successful game untill this day and continues to sell out nationwide. EA has a repuatation for creating different marketing campagins and FIFA is one of their most succesfull games.

Audience

There are 2 males on the picture, Football is predominantly a male game, but it would still apply to some females who like sport. There is no specific age range as young kids to adults can play the game, although on the cover it says 12+ which states children under the age of 12 would struggle on how to play the game. The main colours are black, white, strong red and strong blue; these are more manly colours, whereas females would like softer colours such as pink, light blue and yellow.

Representation

The cover of the fifa game has no ethnicity because the two males on the cover are from different backgrounds, this is normal for Fifa as they represent themselves as cutlery diverse. The videogames market is popular for both male and female but fifa is more focused on males as seen in this advert because of the images and colours used

Media Database

Video games and heavy metal makes young people more likely to commit violent crimes.

In my opinion I disagree with this statement because young people who are the ones who are most likely to be victims of dangerous crimes. Also young people who go and buy themselves a copy of these violent games and play these violent games such as Call of duty and Grand theft auto don't go out and commit violent crimes.

YouTube trailer advertising a show on the channel

              Target Audience
The target audience for BBC would range, at earlier times they would target a range from youngsters (10-17) to elders (18+) because this is the time because schools/work so they are more likely to be watching it. Later on in the day it would range for just elders because this is the time youngsters are in bed and this is where more serious imagery and video clips can be shown.
50% Boys and 50% Girls; I chose this answer because BBC news applies to all boys and girls as there are different gender news that goes around BBC.

Running Order
On the first 2 days of watching the news it was the same stories, the Killings of the Palestinians, The Malaysian plane that was shot down and the US sanctioning Russia, just today’s news had a new head line which was the threat of Ebola.
On the first 2 days the order of news was, Palestine first, then the Malaysian air liner and then the US Sanctions for Russia, and on the third day the Ebola news was first then again the same order of the previous news.

I think the news editors put it in that order of the most important first, the Ebola news is the most important because there is a chance it could end up in our country and the people of this country need to know. The other news goes in order of Palestine second because what is going on there is big news as 1000+ Palestinians are being killed and over 100,000 injured, the Malaysian air liner is important but not as important as the first 2, and then the US sanction has no effect on our country so it is not as big.

Analysing TV News

1) What were the five stories your group chose to broadcast?
Greenford news story: Sean Shaw
National news story: Hong Kong police arrest 500 protesters
London news story: Antibiotic resistance: Cameron warns of medical dark ages
Sports news story: World cup Belgium beat USA 2 - 1

2) For each story above, explain WHY you chose that particular story and not something else. Why would it interest a Greenford audience?
Greenford news story: We chose this story because… It is Greenford high schools most read story and it is an interesting story that will attract more viewers.
National news story: We chose this story because… It is a big thing that is happening right now and more people around the world would like to know what is happening in other countries.
London news story: We chose this story because… It tells people what is going on in their own country as well as knowing what is going on in other countries.
Sports news story: We chose this story because…The world cup is a global thing and people all over the world know about it, it is very popular and attracts people from all over the world.
Funny news story: We chose this story because…  it is a funny story, everyday people are looking for a laugh, laughing is what brings happiness so we chose this story because it can make people smile and laugh which brings them happiness.

3) What order did you broadcast the stories in? Why did you place the stories in that order?

The 1st story we broadcasted was Greenford news, in second place we broadcasted London News, thirdly we broadcasted National news, in the fourth postion we broadcasted Funny news and finally in the fifth postion we broadcated Sports News.
We broadcasted these news topics in the order we gave because firstly comes the important news that more poeple are likley to watch/read then we broadcasted the entertainment such as funny news and sports because all the intresting and fun stuff always comes in the end when watching something like BBC news.

4) How did you make sure the script was the right length?

We made sure the script was the right lenght by removing the sentences we didnt need and by making sure every story lasted 12 seconds by rehersing them over and over.

5) How did you make sure each story was clear and easy to understand?

In order to make sure each story was clean and easy to understand we made sure we kept it very basic and used simple TERMINOLOGY so every one can understand what we were talking about.

6) How did you make sure the broadcast was professional?

We made sure the broadcast was professional by doing what we see professionals do on TV, we took ideas from what they did and reflected this in our own work.
7) What was your specific role in the group?

My specific role in the group was the Journalist, Journalists find the all the news topics and hands it over to the editer.

8) Rate your group’s ability to work collaboratively out of 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent)

In my opinion i would rate my groups ability to work collaboratively around a ' 3 ' because we werent really organised in time and the communication skills was a bit off.

9) How could your group have worked more effectively as a team?

My team could have worked more effectively if we had better organisation and communication skills, by having those not only could we be more effective but also could have worked faster and had a lot more done and covered.

Texture Analysis

Fast and Furious

Genre

The genre for this Media text is a movie trailer. For this movie, Fast & Furious, the main genre would be Action/thriller.

Audience

The target audience for this movie would be on a global scale, as people from different areas of this earth can enjoy the movie. In terms of an age group, I feel any one above the age of 16 can enjoy this movie, it may not be suitable for people under the age of 16 as it could give them ideas to do negative things. although people below the age of 16 may watch it with a parent. I believe there is not a maximum age, as even the elderly can enjoy it as it is just one of those movies any one can get a thrill from.

Platform

This movie would have advertised through all different platforms, mainly through the Internet, they have used TV and Print based adverts but I believe they are more successful through the internet. I believe the internet is better because the internet is a modern day thing, people spend more time on the internet than they do with anything else.

The Simpsons Movie

Genre

The genre for this Media text is also a movie trailer. For this movie, The Simpsons Movie, the main genre for this animation would be Comedy.

Audience

The target audience for this movie would be on a global scale as the Simpsons are very popular in almost every country, people from different countries all enjoy this movie. In terms of an age group, I feel any one can enjoy this movie, I feel it is suitable for any one  any age group as they do not show anything explicit and its friendly to all ages. It is suitable for both males and females and does not appeal to just one gender.

Platform

This movie would have advertised through all different platforms, mainly through television, they have used internet and Print based adverts but I believe they are more successful through television. The Simpsons are very old school and have been around for a very long time, well before the internet was a big thing as they have found success through television and that is why they have stuck to it and it has helped make them more successful.

Transformers

Genre

The genre for this Media text is another movie trailer. For this movie, Transformers, the main genre for this movie would be Sci-Fi/Action.

Audience

The audience for transformers I think would be mainly boys, as this is all about cars and transforming robots, although this may also appeal to some females but I think the main target audience would be males, especially in the teenage age group, this is because I do not think adults would be very interested in giant fighting robots. like other movies I believe this is also targeted on a global scale to people in other countries but mainly male teenagers in other countries.

Platform

This movie would have also advertised through all different platforms, mainly through the internet. I think this is because their audience, teenage boys, are more likely to be sitting on a device that is connected to the internet so they are more likely to see it. Transformers do use television and print based platforms but think they focus more on internet as it can reach more users.
